Summer is the perfect time to explore new activities with your children, and sensory bins are a fantastic way to engage their senses, spark creativity, and encourage imaginative play. These bins are simple to create and can be tailored to fit various summer themes. Here are some ideas for summer-themed sensory bins that are fun for all ages.
1. Ice Cream Shop Sensory Bin Materials:
  • Play dough or kinetic sand (various colors to represent ice cream flavors)
  • Ice cream scoops
  • Small bowls and cones (real or toy)
  • Sprinkles (non-edible, craft sprinkles)
  • Mini spoons
Instructions: Fill the bin with different colors of play dough or kinetic sand. Add ice cream scoops, bowls, cones, sprinkles, and mini spoons. Let your child create their own ice cream shop, scooping and decorating their pretend ice cream.
2. Garden Sensory Bin Materials:
  • Soil or black beans (to represent soil)
  • Fake flowers and plants
  • Small gardening tools (trowels, rakes)
  • Plastic insects (ladybugs, butterflies, worms)
  • Small watering can
Instructions: Fill the bin with soil or black beans. Add the fake flowers, plants, and plastic insects. Include small gardening tools and a watering can. Children can plant the flowers, dig in the soil, and discover the insects.
3. Ocean Sensory Bin Materials:
  • Water beads (blue and clear)
  • Plastic ocean animals (whales, dolphins, fish)
  • Seashells
  • Small boats or rafts
  • Blue food coloring (optional, to dye the water beads)
Instructions: Hydrate the water beads according to the package instructions and add blue food coloring if desired. Fill the bin with the water beads, then add the plastic ocean animals, seashells, and small boats. This bin offers a unique sensory experience with the slippery, squishy texture of the water beads.

Tips for Sensory Play
  • Supervision: Always supervise young children during sensory play to ensure they don't put small items in their mouths.
  • Clean-Up: Use a mat or tray under the sensory bin to make clean-up easier.
  • Storage: Store sensory bin materials in labeled containers for easy reuse.
Sensory bins are a wonderful way to provide hands-on learning opportunities and hours of entertainment. These summer-themed sensory bins can be easily adapted for children of different ages and interests.
